SQUAD NEWS: Academy Graduate Joins Reds

Jack York has become the latest trialist to earn a place in the first team squad. After impressing in preseason, combative midfielder York celebrated his signing with the third goal in the Reds’ 3-1 win at home to Rugby Borough last week.

As well as impressing with Pro:Direct Academy Leicester, who are based at Quorn’s Farley Way home, York spent last season, captaining his local club, Holwell Sports, at just 18 years of age. Sports finished 15th in the United Counties League Division One, with York leading the side in appearances (42), whilst also chipping in with an impressive 10 goals from midfield.

Born in Melton Mowbray, York began his football journey when his Dad introduced him to football, as he managed Mowbray Rangers U7s, and Jack has been playing ever since. Still living in Melton, York remained with Mowbray Rangers through to Under 16 level, where he helped his side to the league title. Wanting a challenge, Jack also played for Cotgrave in the Nottinghamshire Senior League.

After a season with Quorn’s Under 21 side, Jack played closer to home, signing for step six Holwell. “After two years in step six, I realised I was ready for a new challenge” explained York, “I spoke with (Assistant Manager) ‘Wilks’, and he invited me down for preseason.”

“I had watched a handful of Quorn games last year, and I was impressed by the football being played. With the continuity of Ant Carney, and then Ryan Beswick, that style has carried through, so I really wanted to be part of it. It was great to meet the lads, there’s a real togetherness, and this shows why they did so well last year.”

“After just falling short last year, I hope we can go one step further. Preseason has gone well so far and I’m really looking forward to getting started in the league.” York has appeared in all three Quorn victories in preseason, playing 90 minutes in each of the wins against, step three, Alvechurch and step five Rugby Borough, not looking remotely phased by the higher level of opposition.

“I can play anywhere in the midfield, whether that’s playing as a number 10 or number six, but my preferred position is  number eight, where I can go box to box for 90 minutes” York played every second of 39 of Holwell’s 43 matches last season. “I love running for my team and winning the ball back as much as possible, I also enjoy the attacking side of the game and contributing towards goals and assists.”

“We’re so proud of Jack, and delighted to see his talents recognised by Quorn” beamed Pro:Direct Leicester Academy Manager Cheryl Edwards, “We’ve seen what he’s capable of over the past two seasons and it’s a credit to him that he’s taken so quickly to step four football. We’re confident that Jack will be the first of many as we continue the work of developing and educating aspiring young footballers.”

“I’ve had some great moments in football so far” stated York, “but a standout moment for me was when I was given the captain’s armband for Holwell at the age of 17.” We’re certain that there will be plenty more highlights to come.
