REPORT: Quorn 2-1 Alvechurch

Two late goals from Courey Grantham saw Quorn bounce back to keep their winning start to preseason going.

The Reds started the match well enough, holding their own against their full time opponents for the opening twenty minutes, creating a number of half chances without really threatening former Quorn keeper Charlie Woods.

Alvechurch began to play up to their step three status from that point, Dan Sweeney had the ball in the net twice before the half hour mark, but on both occasions the flag had been raised for offside well in advance of the finish. Debutant keeper Tom Allsopp showed how he kept 19 cleansheets the previous session, making a couple of superb saves to keep the scores level.

Sweeney did open the scoring in the 34th minute, when he took advantage of a defensive mix-up to poke the ball into the net. The goal was hotly disputed though as Sweeney clearly pushed Mason Frizelle over to win the opportunity to score. Quorn responded well and kept themselves in the match until the break.

A raft of changes for both sides saw a disjointed start to the second half. Jack Samples, wearing the Captain’s armband again, had a couple of opportunities, one which brought a superb save from Alvechurch’s trialist keeper. The same trialist who scored the third against Nuneaton on Tuesday, went close, only to be denied by a good save.

At the other end, Allsopp got an important tip from a solid drive, to push the ball onto the post. Then, with twelve minutes to go, a good from Quorn allowed Grantham the opportunity to pick his spot and pull the sides level. Ten minutes later Grantham won a penalty, which he converted himself for the winner.

Next up for the Reds is another home tie as they host Rugby Borough on Tuesday evening at 19:45.
