REPORT: Quorn 3-1 Nuneaton Town

The Reds got off to a winning start in preseason as they defeated Nuneaton Town 3-1 at Farley Way. Goals from Paddy Webb and two trialists fired Quorn to victory despite Cody Mullans’ long-range rocket in response for the visitors.

Nuneaton played above their step six status, dominating possession for the opening ten minutes of the match, but without really troubling the Quorn goal. When the Reds did begin to get a grip of the game, it didn’t take long for Webb to get himself off the mark, working space to hit a right foot shot into the bottom corner of the Nuneaton goal in the 13th minute.

The trialist playing in the number 10 shirt impressed during the first half, and took his 28th minute goal beautifully, firing Quorn into a 2-0 lead. A defensive error shortly afterwards saw Mullans handed possession midway in the Reds’ half, lobbing the keeper with a well-aimed snapshot to halve the deficit.

Both sides rang the changes at half time, with trialists for the most part making up both sides. Jack Samples led the Quorn contingent and almost scored a superb solo effort as he beat a couple of defenders, cut inside and shot from the edge of the box. Nuneaton’s trialist keeper was able to palm his effort away though, amongst a series of fine saves in the final 45 minutes to keep the score down.

The one shot he couldn’t stop was from the trialist wearing number 19, whose effort with 10 minutes to play, sealed a winning start to preseason for Ryan Beswick’s side. Stiffer challenges are to come in the coming weeks though, starting with step three Alvechurch on Saturday afternoon at 2pm. The match will be followed by Happy Hour in the bar from 4pm-5pm, before England’s Euro 2024 QF vs Switzerland is broadcast on the big screen in the clubhouse.
