REPORT: Lye Town 0-2 Quorn

The Reds left it late on Tuesday evening as stoppage time goals from Zak Goodson and Courey Grantham secured another way win Quorn.

Bottom side Lye Town belied their position in the burgeoning NPL Midlands division, showing a defensive metal that frustrated Quorn for large stretches of the match. There’s no doubt that Ryan Beswick’s side enjoyed the vast majority of the possession, but the Flyers tightly packed their area to limit the Reds to a couple of long-range efforts.

George Barrett made a couple of assured saves to deny Goodson and Beswick as they managed the only efforts on target in the first half, as Lye’s defensive ranks seemingly managed to block everything.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Lye limited to a couple of chances on the break, but whenever they did foray forward their shooting left a lot to be desired. Their best chance of the match came in the 80th minute as Keanu Cooper found space in the six-yard box but his header was straight at Tom Allsopp.

Quorn kept plugging away and in the 92nd minute, finally found the goal their dominance deserved. Paddy Webb broke down the left and put a ball across goal that somehow evaded a couple of his teammates. Goodson picked it up wide of the far post, twisted and turned to create space and curled his effort around his man and past Barrett into the bottom corner.

There were still four minutes of added time remaining, and Quorn retreated deep to maintain their lead. Webb hooked a clearance forward that fell perfectly in-between Grantham and Barrett, with the Reds striker getting the vital touch to round the keeper. Despite the wide angle, Grantham kept his cool and fired in the second with the last kick of the match.
